Summary of accommodation This fabulous 19th Century farmhouse has recently opened for business after extensive renovations. Held in the same family for 150 years, the accommodation offers beautiful b&b suites, a swimming pool and lovely views over the river valley below. Immersed in the countryside, but just 15km from Taormina, 16km from Mount Etna & 8km from the nearest beach, the farmhouse is ideally situated. Catania airport is approximately forty minutes drive away.

Accommodation details The farmhouse is set in almost 4 hectares of land which has largely been planted with olives and fruit tress. An access road leads up to the property from a minor road below, so the accommodation offers a haven of tranquillity.

The farm buildings date from the early 19th Century, but all have been lovingly restored to provide extremely comfortable accommodation, whilst maintaining a traditional Sicilian feel. Features include wooden ceiling beams, exposed stone walls, ceramic floor tiles and antique furniture.

The rooms are split between the main structure, which contains six rooms and the converted barns and stalls, which provide another four rooms. All of the rooms are located on the ground floor. Two of the rooms have bathrooms that have been modified for disabled use.

The rooms have been numbered using cards from the traditional Italian card game called ‘Scopa’. All of the rooms offer air-conditioning, an ensuite bathroom with a shower and a television.

Area info. The farmhouse is located near the village of Mitogio and the town of Gaggi and has numerous restaurants nearby. This area is famous for the River Alcantara which runs just 4km away from the farmhouse in the valley below. The river originates in the Nebrodi mountains to the north and meets the sea just south of Giardini Naxos and offers numerous activities for visitors, including trekking and body-surfing. Much of the route that the river follows has now been set aside as a protected nature reserve.

The town of Taormina is just 15km away and has numerous shops, bars and restaurants many centered on Corso Umberto. There is also an ancient Greek Theatre where live concerts are often performed during the peak summer months. The coastal area of Taormina Mare has many public and private beaches including Mazzaro Bay where the cable car station is located, Isola Bella, which is a protected island and the nearby resort of Giardini Naxos. The nearest beach to the farmhouse is located at San Marco, just 8km away.

No visit to this area of Sicily would be complete without a trip to Mount Etna, which is located under 20km away. Self drive excursions, or guided tours are easily undertaken, with both half and full day trips on offer with a local geologist, which the staff at the farmhouse will happily organise for you.

Further afield from Etna are the Provincial capitals of Catania, Messina and Siracusa, the latter being famous for its archaeological history, ancient Greek theatre and the island of Ortigia. It is also possible to reach the port town of Milazzo (approx 1 hour drive) from where regular hydrofoils serve the Aeolian Islands.
