| Area info. |
The Baroque town of Modica is located 20km inland from the nearest beach resorts of Marina di Modica and Sampieri and approximately 10km from the Provincial capital, Ragusa.
Settlements in the area date from as early as 7th century BC , when the town’s natural defensive position on a rocky promontory made it an important strategic location. In Medieval Sicily it became an important centre of population which continued up until the end of the 19th century, when it was still the 4th largest town in Sicily.
Sites of interest in the town include the two Baroque cathedrals of San Giorgio and San Pietro, the former considered by many to be one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in Sicily. The main street in the town, Corso Umberto, offers numerous other important historical building, including the Court house, which was once a Benedictine convent, the Teatro Garibaldi and several 18th century pallazzi. There are also several huge flights of steps which connect the lower town (Modica Bassa) with the upper town (Modica Alta)
Slightly further afield are the other Baroque towns of Noto, Ispica, Scicli and Ragusa Ibla, which together were granted United Nations World Heritage status. Other sites of interest include Cava d’Ispica, the fort at Donnafugata, whilst the port town of Pozzallo provides a regular ferry service to Malta.
An hour to the north lies Siracusa, which besides Ortigia, the original old quarter of the city, includes the magnificent ancient Greek theatre, where performances are still staged in May and June.
